Hay Fever

Hay Fever

An allergy characterized by sneezing,

Like all allergies, hay fever is caused by sensitivity to certain substances. Pollens and the spores of molds are the substances to which most hay fever sufferers are sensitive. Pollen is the fertilising element of flowering plants. It is a fine dust, easily airborne, which enters the body by inhalation. Ragweed pollen is a particular nuisance to persons subject to hay fever. Mold is a fungus that grows on animal and vegetable matter. The spores of molds are dust like reproductive units that are also present in the air we breathe.

The amount of pollen in the air varies with the season and geographic area. East of the Rocky Mountains, the peak of the regional hay fever season occurs between mid-August and mid-September, when the air is heavy with the pollen of the ragweed plant. An appreciable number of hay fever sufferers are also reactive to the spring pollens from grasses and trees. Mold-bearing plants such as wheat, barley, and corn are prevalent in the agricultural areas of the Midwest, and attacks of hay fever caused by Mold spores are common there as these crops ripen.

Hay fever deserves to be recognized as more than a mere nuisance. By causing lack of sleep and loss of appetite, it can lower the body’s resistance to disease. It can cause inflammation of the ears, sinuses, throat, and bronchial tubes. A number of hay fever sufferers develop ASTHMA.
